Sexual Exploitation of Young Refugees in Greece
In 2015, Greece found itself on the frontline of the biggest refugee crisis since World War II and caught unprepared to receive record numbers of people. The EU shut its border to Greece in 2016 to prevent refugees from moving further up the continent, leaving 50,000 people trapped there. Among them are up to 3,000 unaccompanied children aged 12 to 17 who have traveled alone from countries like Afghanistan, Syria, Iraq and Pakistan. With insufficient accommodation, almost half of the young unaccompanied refugees in Greece have fallen outside of the system, many ending up on the streets where they are exposed to all sorts of dangers, including sexual exploitation and abuse.

1.7m children involved in commercial sexual exploitation worldwide - BBC News
Growing numbers of children globally are being pulled out of school and into work, the head of the UN's labour body has told the BBC, putting their futures at risk.

The world is at a “critical moment” when it comes to child labour, says Gilbert Houngbo, head of the International Labour Organization.
He tells the BBC the Covid pandemic led to an increase in children being put to work and that economic problems, including the rising cost of living, have now added to the problem. At its worst, he says children are being put into jobs where they are sexually exploited.

‘Magnificent’: Meloni blasts France’s ‘exploitation’ of African countries on live TV
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has given a TV interview explaining how France “continues to exploit poor, African countries” which then adds to Europe’s illegal immigration crisis, Sky News host Rita Panahi says.
“She said the solution is not to take the Africans and bring them to Europe, the solution is to free Africa from certain Europeans who exploit it,” Ms Panahi said.
“The left who pretend to care about poor people and the flood of illegal, economic migrants into Europe should be making that precise same argument, instead of making people smugglers rich and painting anyone who objects to illegal immigration as racist.”

Exploitation of minerals at world heritage site
The Virunga park in the Democratic Republic of Congo is home to a unique combination of active volcanoes, forests, savannah and some of the world's last mountain gorillas. But due to a nearly two- decades long conflict in the region, sectors like tourism haven't had room to develop. Now, the discovery of oil near the border with Virunga, in DR Congo's more stable neighbour Uganda, is sparking renewed interest in the area's economic potential. Conservation groups, however, say the park should be left alone. Peter Wakaba has more.

We meet two boys, aged 15 and 16 who were coerced into prostitution in exchange for food and a few euros. We also speak the Mayor of Athens, Giorgos Kaminis, who is outspoken about the horrors facing young refugees in his city, and investigate whether his attempts to put pressure on the police have been effective.

Growing numbers of children globally are being pulled out of school and into work, the head of the UN's labour body has told the BBC, putting their futures at risk.
It comes as economic problems hit families around the world.
In the first of a series on the impact on children of the global cost of living crisis, Barbara Plett Usher reports from Kenya about the growing number of children pushed into the sex trade.
